Brothers and Children's Hospital Colorado patient ambassadors, Zane, age 6, and Zeke, 4, are bound by more than just blood; they were both born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a rare congenital condition in which the left side of the heart doesn’t develop properly.While Zane underwent reparative surgeries and treatments for his condition, Zeke needed a heart transplant before turning one. Recently, Zeke celebrated his "Heartaversary," a day in which he and his family celebrate his second chance at life while honoring the donor and the donor's family who gave him the greatest gift. In the past five years, there has been a 63% increase in mental health visits to a Children's Colorado Emergency Department. Partners like the 2221 Society have joined the fight for kids' mental health, launching a fundraising effort to renovate the North Campus Emergency Department to enable child-appropriate services for kids in mental health crisis. This includes modifying inpatient beds to be psych safe and exam room updates. In its first year (2023), the Children's Hospital Colorado Therapy Care on Telstar, Colorado Springs had more than 8,000 treatment days and served more than 830 unique patients for pediatric mental health services. Southern Colorado continues to see an increase in need for mental health services, and philanthropic partners like Ent Credit Union have stepped up to increase support for mental health in Colorado Springs. Since 2019, Ent has raised nearly $2 million to Children's Hospital Colorado for mental health and recently launched a fundraising campaign this May as a part of #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth to match donations up to $200,000, dollar for dollar across Colorado. Matched donations can be made at givechildrensco.org/entBesides the dollars raised towards mental health services, Ent Credit Union is working with us to fund other great healthcare needs for our Colorado Springs community. During Child Life Month, we celebrate our Children's Hospital Colorado child life specialists – and the donors who help make their life-changing work possible. For kids like our ambassador Maddy, whose ruptured appendix required multiple surgeries and caused life-threatening complications, Child Life made all the difference in her care and recovery. Our nurses and Child Life team helped educate Maddy and her family about everything she was going through by making sure her beloved stuffie, Frankie the Fox, got the same care she received to help her understand what was happening. “Frankie the Fox had an ostomy bag, wound VAC (a wound healing therapy) and PICC line (IV for medication and liquid nutrition)," said Becky, Maddy's mom. "Child Life made sure he was going through the same stuff."

At the heart of Spirit Halloween is Spirit of Children, a fundraising program focused on making hospitals less scary for kids and their families. Spirit of Children has raised more than $2 million for the Child Life department at Children's Hospital Colorado since 2007. This year, we celebrated more than $230,000 raised in support of our Child Life teams at the Anschutz and Colorado Springs campuses! Thank you. ❤️
