There’s no better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than recognizing all the women who help us build a better future by reinventing our present. We’re proud to say that FARM Rio is composed of 94% women, with 74% female high-level leadership (board and executive management) and 81% in corporate governance (managers, specialists, coordinators, and supervisors)*. In our Young Apprentice Program, under Grupo Soma, about 85% are women, and the group has the Women on Board seal, an independent initiative supported by UN Women that highlights and promotes female presence in corporate governance.Our journey started with Kátia Barros, who made real her dream of creating a fashion brand that could translate the femininity of Brazilian girls, and today she’s among the 500 Most Influential People in Latin America (Bloomberg’s 2022 List) for spreading FARM Rio’s essence worldwide. For Kátia, “fashion has become a platform through which we can collectively make the world a fairer place, valuing social and cultural projects for inclusion and sustainability, and keeping people and diversity at the core of our decision making”. Seven years ago, we embarked on a transformative journey from our hometown, Rio de Janeiro, to the Indigenous Land of Rio Gregório within the Amazon rainforest. During our visit, we had the opportunity to meet the Yawanawa community and begin a relationship of mutual care with the local women — that has blossomed in many ways.Their traditional jewelry, the rauti, became the perfect match for our clothing, with some of their patterns evolving into gorgeous prints. But we also have empowered 180 women artisans, donated 7,000 trees to aid in the recovery of deforested areas, generated USD 246,000 in direct income, and facilitated the implementation of internet access in seven Yawanawa villages. These initiatives have fostered financial autonomy and food security (through the Yawanawa life plan) and substantially contributed to their cultural, social, and environmental well-being.Still, this year, our partnership with the Yawanawa women turns a new leaf as we introduce a new collaborative capsule with pieces that are living stories of their land and culture within the rainforest.
