Ask Question?

IFBB Pro League’s Brandon Curry believes this stress-free prep could pave the way for him to regain the Sandow trophy. In his first interview of the season, Brandon Curry appeared on Desktop Bodybuilding to discuss his progress and strategy ahead of 2023 Mr. Olympia.

“To possibly capitalize on another title it would be great, awesome. I’m going to control all the factors I can control,” shared Brandon Curry.

Brandon Curry is a hybrid among contenders in the Men’s Open class. He possesses beautiful shape, structure, and symmetry, but retains enough muscle fullness and separation to push elite mass monsters of the category.

An established IFBB Pro, Curry has competed in the sport for well over a decade, where he’s enjoyed incredible success, thanks to calculated training, nutrition, and supplementation. Curry reached the pinnacle of his bodybuilding tenure in 2019, a season that saw the 40-year-old not only claim gold at the Mr. Olympia but the Arnold Classic as well.

Aside from his lone Mr. Olympia title, Curry cemented himself as a two-time Arnold Classic winner last March, where he defeated divisional standouts William Bonac and Steve Kuclo for gold.

Curry entered the 2022 Olympia as an underrated threat, proving himself yet again on the sport’s greatest stage in fourth place, surpassing names like Samson Dauda and Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay. With Hadi Choopan holding the crown now, Curry laid out what it’s going to take to regain his title and follow in Jay Cutler‘s footsteps.

Brandon Curry Says 2023 Mr. Olympia Will Come Down to Conditioning

The former 2019 Mr. Olympia revealed that prep has been “chill” and “productive” thus far with “no stress.” Even though he hasn’t been active on social media, Curry says fans shouldn’t mistake that for a lack of commitment to the sport.

“Feeling good. It’s been a nice chill productive prep so far. So no stress for me right now, no stress,” said Brandon Curry. “The nature of the internet of course, if they don’t see, if you’re not active on social media, they don’t think you exist. If you’re not posting new updates they don’t think you exist. It’s a funny thing.”

As for progress, Curry emphasized that he’s “definitely ahead” and has managed to lean down while preserving his muscle fullness.

“We’re definitely ahead. We’re definitely a lot harder, more separation, just leaner in general. Muscle fullness is still there. Last year we came in bigger than what was typically done in previous years. But we are still carrying the size and the fullness, but everything is just harder. That was the goal bringing a harder leaner physique into this Olympia. We’re on par for that, we’re comfortable where we’re at right now.”

Given the opposition, Curry imagines conditioning will be crucial to success in November.

I just keep getting leaner. I keep getting leaner,” added Curry. “You can see I’m already a lot leaner just into some days from this shot. We shot on a shoulder day.”

“With the current lineup, conditioning will definitely be the priority. I’ll let the muscle bellies and the natural fullness that I have carry me out through the rest of the time.”

Curry is targeting a specific look, adding that his size and conditioning have both improved by leaps and bounds.

“A lot of people are looking for that Arnold 2019 look but I think I can duplicate that look with a little bit more fullness in the physique as well this year.”

“I’m definitely bigger now. We keep – the weight doesn’t move much – right now, it doesn’t move much at all. I just keep getting better and better conditioning week by week now. We’re at this point where everything is working in the right direction. I’m not starving yet or anything.”

Looking ahead, Curry suggests the Men’s Open lineup “dynamics” cater more to his style of bodybuilding and for that reason, he believes he can win this year.

“For me, I’m still enjoying the sport. It’s not necessarily the end-all-be-all, it’s not do or die on that, but I still think I can be competitive and I still think I’m capable of winning,” shared Curry.

“Yes, of course, I can win. I think this year the dynamics cater more to my style of bodybuilding. I think… so for me, this is an exciting year for me. That’s why I don’t mind when people count me out because I think this year caters more to the advantages I have as an athlete in the sport. We just going to let that play out.”

“We know with my body what it typically does, my body typically is going to make a good composition change no matter how high we try to push the weight, it’s going to make a good composition change. I think we were able to do that comfortable without stressing the body out too much. I came more prepared for this. I did a little extra homework at home.”

Furthermore, Curry says no one in the top five is “thinking they can’t win.”

“It can be any man’s day. Any man’s day. That’s what’s the most exciting thing is. Nobody is going in, I presume no one is going into the Olympia already defeated. Nobody predicted in that top five is thinking they can’t win. I think every guy is going in with the mindset of, ‘Yeah, this could be mine.'”

While fans and bodybuilders have left Curry off their prediction lists, the Open Pro says he’s not bothered by it:

“It’s going to be – Nick of course, he could be swapped in with anybody in there [the top 5]. That’s just the nature of it. I don’t know Hunter… he’s very capable, but I don’t – like I said, I’m not going to throw him in that mix yet, he still has to prove that at this point. For me, people placing me lower than the top five… I’m totally fine with that. Predictions are just predictions at this point. It doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t pay attention to predictions.”

Curry Discusses Big Ramy’s Future After Pulling Out of 2023 Mr. Olympia

Curry hopes Ramy can take care of whatever issues held him back from participating at the nearing Olympia.

“This weekend Ramy made his announcement at the Dubai Pro about not competing at the Olympia, but until the athlete officially does that I don’t think you should count them out from competing in the show.”

“I had a conversation with him about it. You got to care of yourself and do you thing. He [Ramy] said he needed to rest. So he has to do what he has to do. He loves to compete man, that’s what he loves to do. I know he’ll be back. It’s always a pressure to compete with Ramy he’s one of the guys that’s challenged me the most.”

“I hope he comes back if that’s what he wants to do. I hope he’s able to take care of what he needs to take care of. All the best to you Ramy, for sure.”

Even though Big Ramy won’t be competing at Olympia, Brandon Curry will still be tasked with a challenging roster of bodybuilders. In order to win back gold, Curry has to get through the reigning champ, Choopan, runner-up Derek Lunsford, and Nick Walker — all of whom placed ahead of him at the 2022 Olympia contest.

The sport’s biggest event of the year will take over Orlando, Florida’s Orange County Convention Center from November 2-5. Should Curry win back the Sandow trophy, he will join Jay Cutler as only the second man to ever win back the Mr. Olympia title.
