i had my bloods done at 4w5D & my TSH came back 3.5. i was put on low dose of Levothyroxine but day 1 & 2 taking it i thought i was having a heart attacks & went really dizzy i didn’t feel right at all for 15-20 mins.
my dr told me to stop it immediately but we haven’t tested my thyroid again now i’m 7weeks.
i’m going to ask for a new test! HELP:
this time do it early in the morning & should i fast?
what did you do?
also taking pre natal Elevit so hope that’s ok or should i stop that days before?

Make sure to stop biotin a couple days before testing. It doesn’t really matter when you test but be consistent. I like to go right in the morning and I don’t take my meds before. I take my synthroid and eat after I’ve done my blood test.
Also maybe start with a lower dose or alternating days first instead of taking it everyday right away. I was so sensitive to synthroid when I first started and I just had to take it a lot slower to start.

we are on the same boat here. I tested 3.67 and was put on a low dose. However, my doc advised me to keep going. If your doc told you differently I would definitely listen. I don’t have any adverse side effects but I am hoping to get off of it at some point, maybe after I gave birth. I try to eat well and exercise regularly which helps managing under-functioning thyroid.

@Lexx44,
I feel you entirely. Gym isn’t necessarily on my mind right now but I know it’s great for the baby. I also have a torn ACL which I should have gotten surgery for but due to our little surprise we have to post pone it. I can’t do a lot but I gotta kick myself in the butt lol.

And to answer your question, they always take your levels fasting (pretty sure). Prenatals should not affect your thyroid levels and keep taking them unless you are told not to.

No need to fast for thyroid blood test. Maybe see if your practitioner can prescribe you synthroid brand levothyroxine? it’s more expensive (US dollar per day for me) but I had annoying symptoms with the cheap no name brand levothyroxine and feel fine on brand name synthroid. It’s worth trying!

hi! I’m going to chip in because I have Hashimoto’s and I’ve been on Levothyroxine for 13 years so I’ve been through many years of blood tests and dose changes including during pregnancy.
You don’t need to fast for the blood test. But you do need to make sure when you’re taking your levothyroxine that it has to be on an empty stomach with just water and nothing else for at least 30 minutes. Also, the prenatal needs to be separated by at least 4 hours so I take mine at night and the levo in the morning.
In many states in the US, levothyroxine is listed as a narrow therapeutic index drug and that basically means that a tiny change in dose or even a change in the manufacturer can change your level or experience with side effects. My pharmacy has to call and ask my doctor’s permission to change the manufacturer of my levothyroxine.
With Hashimoto’s your immune system basically attacks your thyroid over several years until it doesn’t function at all anymore so I’ve had close to 100 blood draws with dose changes including once a month during pregnancy. Even the tiniest change in dose, for example once my doctor had me add one extra half of a tablet only on Saturdays, can bring your level down or increase it. Anyway, enough of a lesson on thyroid meds haha.

@MerryLibrarian,
yeah it’s all so confusing to me! i’m in australia our healthcare system are different!
i took half tablet so 25mg morning first thing and didn’t eat for 1 hour later as i was told. then 20-30 mins i would have those reactions then was told after two days to stop it by my dr. i take Elevit pregnancy vitamin at night before bed so i dont vomit it up.
but now i don’t know what my level is and my anxiety is high! so i thought i better go back to the gp to seek advice in a new test which i wont fast thank you! because i am 7 weeks now like shouldn’t the dr keep checking

No biotin in your prenatal, so that's good. Technically, you TSH isn't at a "must treat" level, it's just a little outside of the optimum zone for the first trimester. Mine is the same and my fertility doctor said that I'm not going on meds yet, but we're redoing bloodwork to keep an eye on it every month.
They should also look at more than just TSH to make sure. My other stuff was fine so that's why they chose no meds for this pregnancy.

Hi! I have had hypothyroidism since I was 22 and I am now 34. You do not have to fast before your test. You do want to take your synthroid or levothyroxine before you eat and separate from any other pills. You need to allow 2 hours after taking it before taking any other pills or eating. This is only because it can affect absorption. I take mine at night because I forget to take it before anything else.

Hi! I’ve had Graves’ disease since 2009, and have been taking thyroid medication ever since. Synthroid always made me feel weird, so I actually switched to Armour Thyroid. Luckily here in the US they have a generic called NP Thyroid.
My thyroid doctor always had me fast before testing. Your Free T3 is actually more important than the TSH levels. At least that’s what I’ve been told.
Also, if your throat is feeling swollen where your thyroid is, I’d try to see a thyroid specialist just in case something else is going on. Can I ask how old you are? I noticed a bump on my neck when I was around 21-22, and that’s when my thyroid issues had started.
Good luck! ❤️ I’m also at 7 weeks with my first! :)
